A Suggested Itinerary For Visitors to Visit Chinatown, Singapore

For many Visitors to Singapore, I am pretty sure that Chinatown is one of the must visit places of interest. I have a suggested itinerary for any visitors out there. My personal preference is to visit a place to see and feel the local culture and the day to day activities besides the touristy places, so that’s what I will incorporate in the itinerary.

I would suggest that if you are an early bird, be at Chinatown as early as 8am. Otherwise, start your day, if possible, no later than 11pm.

The first stop in the itinerary is to have breakfast a Chinatown Complex, to have a hearty breakfast before the start of your day. I strongly encourage you to skip your hotel breakfast. Proceed to the second level, some may called it first floor (above the ground floor). Anyway. The second level is a food centre, you may hear the words “Hawker Centre” from the local at times.

This is a huge food centre, unfortunately, there is no air-conditioned, so it may be a bit warm but it is worthwhile as the food is very local and yummy too. This is where the local usually dine. I dine there too, especially for breakfast on weekends. If you have no idea of what to eat, read my post on “My Five Usual Breakfast Haunt at Chinatown Food Center, Singapore” for some suggestions.

Next, visit the wet market which is located at the basement of Chinatown Complex Food Centre. There are various staircase leading to basement. Use anyone of them. On the weekdays, it is usually not very crowded. The crowd exist mainly on weekends. So it really depends on your preference. Have a look at what’s in store, the design, the feel in the wet market and see the activities. And of course, don’t forget to take photos.

After the visit to market, it should be still pretty early, most of the shops were probably not opened yet. You may want to spend some time at the Buddha Tooth Relics Temple and Museum, Sri Mariamman Temple and/or Jamae Mosque (Chulia Mosque). All are within walking distance.

If you are still very early, you may want to pop by Nanyang Old Coffee for a cup of the traditional local kopi (means coffee). It was voted the best kopi in 2013. There is a mini museum on the traditional kopi too. You can read my post on traditional local kopi to have a better understanding of this kopi drinking tradition here. And on how to order, click here.

Alternatively, you may want to visit Chinatown Heritage Centre at Pagoda Street. It is a museum recreating the look and feel of the 1950s interior shophouse tenants, giving visitor a view of a piece of Singapore history.

I would think it is almost time for some shopping and since you are at Pagoda Street, you may want to start shopping along Pagoda Street, Trengganu Street for some Singapore souvenirs for family and friends. On ya, before I forget, there is a Tin Tin Shop and a Singapore Coins and Notes Museum along Pagoda Street, a few shophouses to the right of Chinatown Heritage Centre, in case you are interested.

When you are done with your shopping, lunch time. There are a few Dim Sum Restaurant in Chinatown. There are Yum Cha Teahouse and Tak Po Restaurant. All are serving delicious Dim Sum.

After lunch, I would suggest that you dropped by the Chinese Traditional Pastry shop in Chinatown. If you like visit them all. The three famous one are Tai Chong Kok (大中国), Tai Thong Cake Shop (大同饼家) and Tong Heng (东兴精制饼食). Each has its speciality. Find out more from my post here.

Another must try is the Barbecue Pork or Pork Jerky. The local will call it Bak Kwa. The most famous is Lim Chee Guan (林志源), followed by Bee Cheng Hiang (美珍香). There is another shop known as Fragrance, not as popular but as good and cheaper.

If you have sweet tooth, have some Chinese desserts at Mei Heong Yuen Dessert (味香园甜品). Alternate dessert locations are Sugar Granny and … They serve similar desserts. Try the walnut, almond or sesame paste. Alternatively, milk pudding, herbal jelly, red bean lotus, Glutinous Rice Ball in Ginger Soup (Sesame & Peanut), Cheng Tng or Almond Black Glutinous Rice. These are very local desserts. If you are not that adventurous, I would suggest Mango with Pomelo & Sago or Mango Pudding.

You may prefer a cup of the western cafe coffee, head for the Aterial which is at the heart of Chinatown, along Temple Street or The Lokal.

After the break, time for more exploration, the next destination on my suggested itinerary is dropped by People’s Park Complex. People’s Park (Block 32) and OG departmental store. These are the oldest serving shopping mall and departmental store in Singapore where the local shop at.

Should you need more dose of local fare, dine at the People’s Park Food Centre. Try some of the local fare such as Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee, Chicken Rice, Fried Oyster Omelette, Ngoh Hiang Mee Hoon, Fried Kuey Tiao, Fried Carrot Cake … many many more. These are some suggestions. You can read my must post on “Must Eat Food for Visitors in Singapore“.

And it is time to part with Chinatown and proceed to next your destination.

A Bonus suggestion, if you are an early bird, drop by Pearl’s Hill City Park before breakfast. This park has rich history which is not known by many. I will be doing a post on this park soon.

Curbside Cafe & Wine Bar At The Research Town, The Nucleos At Biopolis

Curbside Cafe & Wine Bar is located within the Biopolis Research Town at ground floor of The Nucleos Building, South Tower. It’s about 10 minutes walk from One-North MRT station.

It has a pretty sleek and simple decor with some wall painting by a pillar. The tables were mainly uniform wooden material some metal chairs. Luckily the cafe is not extremely cold, otherwise the chair would have been too cold to sit on at first. There is a comfy cushy black sofa at a corner of the cafe. Looks very cosy. There are some hippy ornaments like a electric guitar and some skate board placed at some hidden corner.

Curbside Cafe & Wine Bar's Menu
Curbside Cafe & Wine Bar’s Menu

Curbside Cafe has a menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are quite an extensive selection of sandwiches, salad, soup, pasta, burgers, chicken, beef and fish dishes and desserts too. I was tempted by the The RVCB and The Smorecano in the desserts section. The RVCB is a Red Velvet Cheescake & Chocolate Brownie, sounded so rich and yummy, while The Smorecano is a lava cake served with toasted marshmallow and banana puree. I love toasted marshmallow. I start to salivate at the thought of it. LOL.

My Lunch, Corned Beef Hash
My Lunch, Corned Beef Hash

I was reviewing my Instagram pictures yesterday and noticed that I have sandwiches for lunch three days in a row. On Friday I have Chicken Avo sandwich at the Souper Sarnies; Saturday, I have Smoked Salmon Sandwich at the Three Hands Coffee and on Sunday, I have a Pulled Duck Sandwich at the Sunday Market. I have enough of sandwiches so No More sandwiches for today. I choose the Corned Beef Hash served with Poached Eggs (Yummy) and Sourdough. As I never like Sourdough, I asked for Ciabatta. Now that I am looking the the photos, ya, kind of I have bread again for lunch. I must make it a point not to have bread for lunch from tomorrow.

My Coffee, with upside-down Latte Art for Right-handed
My Coffee, with upside-down Latte Art for Right-handed

The Corned Beef Hash was tasty as it was fried with lots of diced onions and spring onions. Both these ingredients enhanced the flavours of the corned beef. There were lots of diced potato too. I like the poached egg as the yolk was still runny. The coffee is high acidity and medium to light body. It is pretty fruity, like some dark berry note. This is the second cafe that presenting an upside down latte art to a right handed. The first that I encountered was at Assembly Ground. Rather interesting though.

Curbside has very friendly, warm chatty service crew which make you feel very welcome at the cafe. I enjoyed my lunch at the cafe. It is a great cafe for anyone who are working around the area.

Sunday Market At Lim Tua Tow Road, Up and Coming, Hip Cafe

Sunday Market at Lim Tua Tow Road is a great addition to the northeastern part of Singapore. It is at the corner of a row of shops. I heard that it took over the space of The Factory which previously sold fries.

Sunday Market Cafe Front
Sunday Market Cafe Front

The design of the cafe is hip, complex and sophisticated. There is a chandelier hung in the inner part of the cafe. Lots of different kind of paintings were placed in the cafe too. Basically lots of different elements were mixed and match, but blended well together.

What strike me on the menu was a section devoted to duck. I hardly see such an interesting menu. I love the menu, lots of very unique creation served n the cafe. Even the breakfast item was kind of special.

Sunday Market Menu

My lunch was Duck Pulled Sandwich and Cappuccino. Duck is not what I will usually ordered as it is my least favourite, but I decided to try something different today.

I enjoyed my lunch very much. The Duck Pulled Sandwich was great. The pulled duck was well seasoned with flavours. The bread used is my favourite. They served it on Brioche. It was sandwiched with creamy coleslaw. The combination resulted in a tasty sandwich. There are some mesclun greens lightly tossed in vinaigrette by the side.

The coffee has a low acidity, light body and aroma with a nutty, butter scotch flavour notes.

Sunday Market offers quite a number of ice cream flavours, so enticing. I was first attracted by Thai Milk Tea flavour but shortly, I saw Andy’s Flavour and got me curious. You probably won’t be able to guess what’s in the it. This key ingredient is sour and it is commonly used in salad dressing. A very convenient ingredient for salad dressing. One more clue. It’s a black liquid. Not sure if you have guessed correctly.

My Dessert, Balsamic Vinegar Ice Cream
My Dessert, Balsamic Vinegar Ice Cream

I ordered a scooped after trying some. I like it very much. The ice cream has a sourish tinge and it has sweetish fragrance finish taste. This unique flavour is Balsamic Vinegar. I couldn’t believe that it was so good till I tried it. But I am sure this could probably be an acquired taste too. I am quite certain, it is like olive. Not many like it. If you are adventurous, I urge you to try it.

Sunday Market is another welcome addition to the Singapore cafe scene. I like everything Sunday Market got to offer. The food is superb, creative and innovative, ambience is great with warm and friendly service. Though it was fulled at lunch, it wasn’t noisy. A great cafe to chill out. I am looking forward to more unique creation coming from Sunday Market’s kitchen.

The bottomline? It’s a very highly recommended cafe to all, without doubt.

Arts In Langham Place Hotel, Mongkok, Hong Kong

In Langham Place Hotel, Mongkok, there are many arts pieces placed around the hotel. It’s like a mini art gallery. I have a great time viewing some of the arts piece. I have selected some of my favourite pieces for this post.

The first is the Mediation sculpture. When I first saw this, immediately, I thought of reflection. As there was a contrast between the two sculpture, a white and a grey, in between a thin see through barrier. At a closer look, I noticed the grey and white man were not of mirror image so I suppose Mediation would be a better title.

Mediation
Mediation

I don’t really understand the next sculpture, holding a red flag. It was titled Austria. Not sure why. It seems to be is like in victory or something along this line.

Austria Flag
Austria Flag

There were many paintings as well. The left is titled “Variation. Visional Sound by Xin Haizhou (忻海洲). Xin Haizhou is a professor in Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, China. His passionate about the youth in China. My impression of the painting is about expression towards the environment. Each may react differently.

I saw the Red Guard Sculpture upon arrival at the hotel on my first day. I was attracted to these two Red Guard. When I saw this, I immediately felt that it is Marching Forward in the modern world. I recalled seeing a street wall painting in Singapore with the traditional ladies holding a modern equipment/tool and these modern equipment/tools were in red. It seems like the artist when they have a contrast of traditions versus modern. The traditions image will be in dark colours while the modern icon will always be in red. I was having lots of fun, taking pictures of these two Red Guard.

There are many more art pieces. I have a great time viewing the pieces. I have few more below, if you enjoy the arts piece as much as I do.

More of the Red Guards in action

Oxidized Babies by Xu Haidong. The artist felt that babies were polluted by the society once they are borned and no longer pure. I feel that the artist is very pessimistic about life.

I have no idea what’s the title of the below art piece but I find it very cute. I noticed that all the head are looking upwards and they have strange expression. I think they are trying to excel in the society but were stressed.

Unknown Title

I may not be correct when I interpret the art pieces. These are only my feeling towards the pieces. If you have read my post on Elffin & Elffin Cafe, you would have known that I am not well-versed in arts. Do correct me if I am wrong for any Arts trained profession reading the post.

Hoped you enjoyed as much as I do.

Three Hands Coffee At Binjai Park (Moved)

I have lunch at Three Hands Coffee at Binjai Park after lots of activities in the morning. Woke up as early as 5.15 am to send my aunt off to the airport, had breakfast at our usual spot in the airport and then went straight to church for a recollection. Finally, I have some time for myself to gear down, relax and enjoy some good food.

Banner Outside Shop
Banner Outside Shop

Three Hands Coffee could be easily missed as there isn’t an obvious sign board. Look out for the banner shown in the photo, placed outside the shop.

It shares the same shop space with Taberna Wine Academy with Three Hands operating in the day while Taberna operates in the night.

When I entered into the cafe through the door by the side, I was attracted by the row of green cushion seats by the side. The green was contrasted with some orange cushions. The bright colours enlivened the atmosphere of the cafe and it brightened my mood too.

Coffee Menu
Coffee Menu

I saw lots of Oriole Coffee Roaster Coffee packs in the cafe so I suppose they are using Oriole. The cafe serves some ham and cheese croissants, smoked salmon sandwich and salad, pastries and cakes. These were narrated by the service crew as they only have a set of menu and it happened to be with the guests. As I heard smoked salmon, something I couldn’t resist so decision was easy.

So my lunch was a Smoked Salmon Sandwich and Cappuccino. There was lots of greens in the sandwich. The smoked salmon was sandwiched between a ciabatta and was served with some chips. The coffee was good too. It has a low acidity, round body and a good aroma. It has a nutty, chocolate flavour and there was a slight hint of caramel.

Rainbow Cake, Complimentary
Rainbow Cake, Complimentary

Three Hands Coffee was in a generous mood, they gave the diners a slice of complimentary Rainbow Cake. I have my share of a free slice too. The xake was soft and moist. Each layer of different colour gave a different fruity flavour. I tasted orange, strawberry, bitter lime. There was a thin spread of cheese frosting between the layers and it was finished with a thick layer of fresh whipped cream on the cake. It was a very tasty cake. It tasted extra yummy maybe because it was free. Lol. X)

Three Hands Coffee has a quiet, pleasant ambience as it is in a quiet estate. The cafe is great for spending time alone or with friends. The service was friendly and warm. Food was good and coffee was great.

The Hideout, An Ice Cream Palour, At Cassia Crescent, Singapore

The Hideout is an Ice Cream Palour at Cassia Crescent, with neighbours like Maple and Market. An addition to this used to be quiet estate. I am sure it is a welcome addition.

I saw some photos of The Hideout ice creams and waffle from a friend’s FB post and was excited to try them out ASAP. Since I have some time today so this is the day.

The Hideout though an ice cream palour, it has some potato chips and breakfast items and various beverages too.

The Menu Board

I was very focused only on the ice cream and nothing else.

Ice Cream Selection
Ice Cream Selection

After trying a few flavours, I settled for a double scoop of Salted Caramel and Green Matcha Ice Cream.

My Order, Salted Caramel and Green Tea
My Order, Salted Caramel and Green Tea

The ice cream has a good amount of creaminess and it is very smooth and milky. Good for those who love milky stuff. Unfortunately, the Green Matcha ice cream has some icy crystals so it wasn’t too good. Strangely, a sweet taste linger in the mouth instead of the flavour of the ice cream. Not sure why is this so.

Comparatively to other local ice cream palour, I think The Hideout is a little not so competitive in terms of ice cream taste. I certainly hope to see a little uniqueness coming from The Hideout too.
