I visited the Tsim Chai Kee Wonton Mee in Central, they seems to have another outlet in Tai Kok Tsui. Tsim Chai Kee sells mainly Wonton Noodles. It is a Michelin recommended restaurant but not a Michelin starred restaurant.
I read in some blogs about Tsim Chai Kee as a new entry to the Wonton Mee world but this doesn’t mean anything to me. I am interested to try as long as it is serving good food.
When I stepped into the restaurant at about 4 pm, it was full house. I waited for a few minutes before getting a seat. In my mind, the crowd at such weird hours seems an indication of great food.
I took a glance at the menu. It was a concise one. They were serving pure Wonton Mee, Wonton Mee with Fishballs and Wonton Mee with Beef. They have it dry or soup and if you can’t decide you can have both. They serve vegetables, but only one type. And several types of drinks all at the same price. I only saw the Menu in Chinese, not sure if Engligh Menu was available.
As I wasn’t keen having fishballs or beef, I opted for something simple, something straightforward, with pure Wonton.
The Wonton was succulent. It has lots of prawns and some minced meat in it. The best part was it was wrapped in a very thin layer of skin but I find it a little too salty. The noodle was great. It was Al Dente. The texture was still pretty bouncy and not soft even though after it was soaked for some time. The soup was above average. It would be perfect if it was served in a more tasty soup and less salty wonton.
Till now, I still couldn’t find that perfect bowl of Wonton Mee. For now, I am willing to settle for this next best.
