Paddy Hills At South Buona Vista Road

Paddy Hills at South Buona Vista is the place I experienced the most awful service I ever have. I have to end up walking out of their door hungry and angry after 60 minutes of wait. Who would ever want to do this unless you were extremely upset. This was the first and I hope the only time, I got to do this.

I was at the cafe on a Sunday for lunch. I arrived at about 12.15 pm, the cafe was packed but I still managed to get a seat at the bar since I was alone. I waited for quite a while to get someone to take my order and it was done at about 12.30 pm. I ordered a Cappuccino and The Maze.

My Cappuccino was served after 20 minutes and it was only after I asked them to check my order. I only started requesting them to check when I saw the Barista was no longer busy and started cleaning up. With that, it was a signal that she has missed out my order. When she served me the coffee, at the very least, she was apologetic. And I continued with my wait for the food.

I waited for another good 25 minutes, by now, it was a total of 45 minutes. Moreover, quite a numbers of table were already empty and the chaotic activities ended, so I grabbed hold of a service crew and once again requested them to check and was told I needed to wait for 15 more minutes.

15 minutes was up, I walked up to confront the guy who was kind of “heading” the kitchen and I asked him how long more do I have to wait since I was told 15 minutes more and in total I waited for 60 minutes. To my horror, he was not at all apologetic but was extremely rude. I admit that I was not nice in my tone too. In fact, I was demanding now or I walked out. And  under pressure, his respond was that now is not possible and next were his exact words And you can walk out“. I was amazed that a service crew can utter such nonsense. This pissed me off further. Don’t Paddy Hills Cafe knows Hungry Man Is Angry Man!

And I walked out … as that guy was not at all interested to salvage the situation and to win back the customer.

This was not my first time walking into a crowded cafe or restaurant. It was never 60 minutes of wait and still no food and worse still I have to walk out hungry and angry. The service staff will do their best to pacify me and serve me the food as soon as the can.

Being new and having to learn and tweet the process and so on will result in hiccups which may be unavoidable but being rude is never acceptable. Instead, a better approach is to seek the understanding from the customer and being apologetic.

Moreover, I do understand that there is a substantial waiting time when it is crowded but to endure the wait and coupled with the rude service staff, this is extremely awful to the maximum. It really sucks.

On the side note, most of the service staff were friendly and warm, except for this guy. Such a team player around, is certainly damaging to the brand too. During my wait, I observed his actions and how he worked with his co-workers, I was totally unimpressed. I certain hope either Paddy Hills ensure that he has more training to up his service level or fire him. Do not allow one man to destroy the hard works and good works that were contributed by the rest of your staff.

Doi Chaang At Rochester Mall

Doi Chaang Coffee uses high quality (the top 1%) Arabica beans grew and processed in Northen Thailand village known as Doi Chaang and that’s where their name come from, I supposed and it is now in Singapore, Rochester Mall. You can read more about the Doi Chaang story here.

This is another cafe with some industrial element, cemented floor and wall. And there is a rimmed of photos about Doi Chaang Coffee.

Iced Doi Chaang
Iced Doi Chaang

Doi Chaang Coffee served mainly coffee hot or coffee and various creation beside the standard espresso drinks. I found a pretty interesting such as ordered the Iced Lemongrass Americano, which I want to try it out soon. For non-coffee drinkers, there are a few equally interesting non-coffee creation too. For food, there are Mille Crepe Cakes of 8 flavours daily to accompany your drinks.

I have the Iced Doi Chaang Coffee since it was named after their shop. It was rich and strong. I felt it tasted very much like our local Iced Kopi.

I am not a fan of Mille Crepe Cake but I don’t like to have a coffee without a piece of cake so I went for the Raspberry Yoghurt Mille Crepe. It was moist and full of Raspberry Yoghurt mousse in the cake.

Overall, nice coffee and cakes with decent ambience.

The Find, Modern European Restaurant At Rochester Mall, Outstanding

The Find is a Modern European Restaurant at the second level of Rochester Mall. It is located at a corner. After taking the escalator from ground floor that is near to Swissbake. I walked straight, round the perimeters and I sighted “The Find”.

It has a casual dining ambience with some very bright red cushy sofa seats at random spot. The chairs are mainly black and red metal chairs.

Beside the Ala Carte Menu, The Find offers Set Lunch Menu too. I suppose they do change on a regular basis. For the set lunch menu, you may want to check The Find’s Facebook page. To view the set lunch that was offered while I was there, you can click here. The selection is pretty comprehensive, with seafood, meat, pasta, burgers, sides, desserts and even kids menu for selection.

l decided to try out their set lunch as I find it very value for money. There are two options, 2-course consisting of an appetizer and a main or 3-course consisting of a appetizer, a main and a dessert. I chose to have the 3-course as I wanted to try all the categories.

Arugula Salad
Arugula Salad

Soup is never my choice, so I chose the Arugula Salad over Potato Leek Soup. The salad was amazing. The Arugula was tossed in a sweetish sourish balsamic dressing that was so appetizing. The entire dish has a great balance. And I was surprise to find that the serving was huge.

Ginger Infused Barramundi
Ginger Infused Barramundi

For the Mains, there was an option of fish, Ginger Infused Barramundi and chicken, Herb Marinated Chicken Breast with spagehetti aglio olio. It was a difficult choice as I was worried that the fish might be either fishy or the ginger might be overpowering. I am never keen in Chicken Breast as it is usually tasteless and tough. And so, I finally chose the fish over the chicken. Neither my worries existed. It was so perfectly cooked. There was a mild ginger aroma, the fish was neither over-cooked or under-cooked. It was so perfect till the moisture were still locked in the flesh. The fish skin was lightly crispy with lots of marinate flavours. So ensure that each and every bite consist of the skin to savour the maximum flavour.

Dessert, Panna Cotta with Brewed Coffee
Dessert, Panna Cotta with Brewed Coffee

Finally, the dessert. I decided to have the Panna Cotta instead of the ice cream. The Panna Cotta was topped with a thin layer of strawberry sauce. The Panna Cotta was richly filled with vanilla flavour that seems sugarless while the strawberry sauce was slightly sweetish and the sourish strawberry slices complemented each element perfectly. Make sure each spoon consist of both the sauce and strawberry slice. It was definitely divine.

At every dish, the details were well taken care to create an almost perfect creation. Without doubt, I will certainly return! And indeed it is The Find!

Tart @ Star Vista, Surprisingly … …

Tart is a pastry shop that only sells tart at The Star Vista. It is at the second floor which is non-airconditioned though it is still indoor.

Tart - Shop

The kiosk like shop has a small dinning area. The design it very much like dinning in a garden, very lovely. For the menu, click here.

My Takeaway, Blueberry Cheese Tart & Lemon Tart
My Takeaway, Blueberry Cream Cheese Tart & Lemon Tart

I decided to have a takeaway instead of having there. I brought a Blueberry Cream Cheese Tart and a Lemon Tart home to share with my mom. Our verdict was … … the tarts tasted horrible. After taking a few bites, our tolerance level was over, we decided not to finish the tart. My mom usually has higher tolerance level but she couldn’t take it as well.

First the tart base was thick, is almost 50% of the tart. It was dense and the texture was to the extend of hard and not buttery in taste or whatever. Next the filling of tart was not tasty at all. The Lemon Tart though has a lemon flavour but I find that it tasted too artificial, while the blueberry cream cheese, there was only the sweet blueberry taste and no cream cheese flavour.

Our conclusion, we find that the tarts were a disastrous.

Coffee Culture At The Nanos, Biopolis, A Hybrid

I finally found a cafe, Coffee Culture At The Nanos within Biopolis, selling both the espresso based coffee and the kopitiam kopi. I have been wondering why there isn’t such a cafe that offers the best of both world. Finally, I found one.

Counter cum Cashier

The design also seems pretty hybrid like what they offered on the menu. There is the more western cafe look at the counter and a local kopitiam look at dinning area, a bit like rojak though. The design didn’t really blend together. Anyway, that’s not the main point.

Coffee Culture offers both indoor and outdoor seats. There are more outdoor seats than indoor.

Not only the drinks are best of both world, the food served is also. There is the kopitiam kaya toast and there is the cafe styled ham and cheese toast among others. Coffee Culture serves sandwiches and pasta for lunch as well.

My Breakfast, Cappuccino and Ham & Cheese Toast
My Breakfast, Cappuccino and Ham & Cheese Toast

My breakfast at Coffee Culture was the Cappuccino and Ham & Cheese Toast. While I was writing my post, I suddenly have an idea. I should have ordered a kaya toast with the cappucino or a kopi-c with the Ham & Cheese Toast. LoL.

When I was served with a Cappuccino without Latte Art, a little disappointment set in. After tasting it. Oh my, it is pretty good, considering the quality versus the price of $3 for a so call small cup. It was not small after all. They have three sizes for the drinks; small, regular and large. The coffee has a medium body and acidity, with a slight toffee nutty note and very slight hint of spice.

Coffee Culture is definitely a place for cheap coffee, especially if you need to fix your caffeine craving with large quantity of coffee. It is a decent place to hang out and to spend a little time by yourself. And you don’t have to hope to cafe to kopitiam or vice versa for different type of coffee. You find both the Western and Local Delight in one single cafe.

Coffee Nowhere, Green & Serene

Coffee Nowhere is in the lush Rochester Park. There were so much greeny with nature and I even spotted a squirrel. But it was too fast for me to capture a photo.

Coffee Nowhere
Coffee Nowhere

The cafe, Coffee Nowhere, does not have an area with air conditioned so you get the scent of nature. It has a quite and soothing ambience.

It focsed mainly on coffee. There were various brewing technique coffee. The commonly espresso based coffee and less frequent found hand-drip and cold drip. It serves very limited cakes and pastries for selection. There were three choices when I was there; Red Velvet, Carrot Cake and a Muffin.

Carrot Cake
Carrot Cake

The carrot cake was soft and there was lots of almond, a very nutty carrot cake. The moist was sufficient and it has a good amount of cheese frosting.

My Cappuccino
My Cappuccino

I ordered a Cappuccino. There was a biscotti by the side of the drink. The coffee has a medium body, high acidity with a nutty note and citrus finish, pretty decent.

Cafe

If you like nature and don’t mind that there is no air-conditioned or you want to escape the city, Coffee Nowhere is definitely a good place for that. Lazing at the cafe or spending time with a good book at Coffee Nowhere on the weekends is a good option to recuperate from the exhaustion and to destress before another work week starts.

Envy Coffee At Nexus@One North, Bright and Colourful

Recently, cafe at Biopolis is sprouting fast. Envy Coffee is one, located at the Nexus @ One North, within the research park in Singapore. It is about 5 minutes walk from the MRT station, pretty close by.

I like the design and decor of Envy Coffee. They uses colourful plastics chairs with some cushion chairs of different colours in the cafe against a backdrop of a green wall. That’s the right colour to use, very representative of “Envy”. There are some pictures at a corner of a wall. All these elements make the cafe bright and lively.

After looking at the board menu, on the side of the counter, I couldn’t decide what I want. The service crew, a lady, recommended me Beenut Butter Toast, which consist of a multi-grain bread with peanut butter spread. The peanut butter spread is of a healthier version, honey is substitued with sugar. There are 4 flavours of Beenut Butter Toast; original, B3 (chocolate) and CocoVan (Coconut & Vanilla). I picked the CocoVan, thought it is a interesting combination.

Envy Coffee serves not only breakfast but also lunch. I saw Smoked Duck Miso Spaghetti, a dish that I would want to try. I will drop by for that dish at the next visit.

The CocoVan Beenut Butter taste exactly like Peanut Butter. The Coconut and Vanilla is very subtle.

Two observation I made recently, The first was it was common to have an upside down Latte Art for right-handed.  It happened for two days in a row. Yesterday, it was at On The Table. The second observation was that the Latte Art is a little different. I like that. The coffee was light body and high acidity with a some citrus and spice note.

There is some small ornaments like the photo below on each table. I find it very cute. It’s like someone hidding in a bush or a field spying the diners at the cafe.

Envy Coffee has very warm and very friendly service that make you feel very much like home. I enjoyed my breakfast time at Envy Coffee. It serves good coffee and food. Envy Coffee provides free WiFi too. A great cafe to go to for those who want to check email or work on the go.
