Cafes in Singapore That Offer Pat Bingsu

*This wordpress site has moved to http://www.nahmj.com. For the latest update, please refer to the link here.

Pat Bingsu is a Korean Shaved Ice dessert and it is the first Korean dessert that I know of. When I first tried Pat Bingsu, it reminded me of our Ice Kacang. Hehe. A heap of shaved ice with flavoured syrup poured over it and topped with some ingredients and at the base, there are some ingredients too. Don’t you think Pat Bingsu is very much like Ice Kacang? And cafe selling the Pat Bingsu has started throughout Singapore and is becoming more and more of a popular dessert. So I decided to come up with this list for sharing.

Matcha Pat Bing Su

I tried my first Pat Bingsu at One Ice Cafe. Find it pretty interesting. They served only 4 flavours of Pat Bingsu; Original (with Vanilla ice cream), Matcha (with Matcha ice cream), Oreo (with Vanilla ice cream and oreo crumbles) and Classic (without ice cream). The shaved ice was fine but the flavour that drizzle over the ice was too little.

They are probably the first few, if not the first to have the Pat Bing Su. It was a very big bowl of shaved ice. The good thing about Bing Go Jung is that the condensed milk is served separatedly and you drizzle what you needed. The shaved ice was fine and the flavour in the shaved ice was pretty sufficient. I could taste the flavour at each mouth.

Though the shaved ice is a little rough but the matcha flavour and red bean were abundant. And they serve the condensed milk separately too. I like the sticky rice cakes. Since it is in Chinatown area, this make it the most convenient to get the Pat Bingsu.

The Most Expensive Pat Bingsu

Coffee Bingsu
Coffee Bingsu

The cheapest Pat Bingsu in the cafe is priced at $12.90 with premium at $18.90 making it the most expensive Pat Bingsu. I tried the Coffee Bingsu which is considered to the Premium Bingsu. The shaved ice is indeed different. Somehow, it doesn’t melt in the mouth but sublime. That’s how I feel. The coffee for the Bingsu was a small cup so personally I feel that it wasn’t enough for the entire bowl of ice.

Tom N Toms offers free WiFi and has ample seats. Another plus point, it open from early in the morning till late in the night. And the Pat Bingsu is awesome too. It has quite a number ingredients beside the big bowl shaved ice. It has glutinous rice balls, red beans and lots of nuts, providing an extra texture. I wish the shaved ice to be finer and that would be awesome.

The Pat Bingsu has a heap of ice and tons of syrup and condensed milk and there is no other ingredients at the bottom. You need to place your order at the Self Service Kiosk that are stationed at the entrance. Since the restaurant is at Sentosa Island, so after having fun out in the sun, time for something cool and a Pat Bingsu would be nice.

If you are working around Raffles Place around and are craving for a Pat Bingsu, hop over to Chicken N Ken. The shaved ice is reasonably fine and the ingredients was enough to accompany the shaved ice so that you won’t be feeling like you are eating only ice. For those who don’t feel that it is sweet enough, the condensed milk is provided in the syringe. Good for customisation. Enjoy Pat Bingsu together with more Korean dishes

One Ice Cafe At J.Cube, Jurong East

One Ice Cafe is a Korean cafe, selling Korean desserts, Korean drinks. It is located within the J Avenue, facing Itacho Sushi.

Menu
Menu

It has a very focus menu with Bing Su, shaved ice with toppings and Korean Egg Bread, Brownie, some Korean Tea & Drinks, and Coffee. It’s a once glance menu.

Most who were at One Ice Cafe will be going after their Bing Su so will I. I tried the Matcha Bing Su.

Matcha Pat Bing Su
Matcha Pat Bing Su

It is considerably a big bowl of shaved ice with some jelly cube buried within the ice and some form of syrup were lightly drizzled over the shaved ice. It was topped with red bean, a scoop of Matcha ice cream and the rest of the ice were covered with cornflakes. I quite like the taste and texture. Though the red bean was pretty sweet as always but when eaten with the ice that are tasteless, neutralizes the sweetness.

This dessert is certainly good for sharing. I will want to try the Korean Egg Bread on my next week.

Chicken Talk Kitchen At West Coast Road

Chicken Talk Kitchen is a Muslim owned family cafe in West Coast Village. Good news for our Muslim friends staying in the West.

Counter
Counter

I am curious why Chicken Talk and not other animal talk. This is a question I forgotten to ask when I was there.

The cafe does not have the most cosy settings. All are simple and sleek.

Chicken Talk Kitchen offers a very wide selection one page menu. There are good selections from Starters, Pizza, Salads, Pasta, Mains and Desserts. For lunch, set lunch menu is also available. There are also Student Menu too. I happen to choose a Main that is part of the Set Lunch Menu so of course I will opt for that. The lunch set is in fact cheaper than the Main itself, extremely valued for money.

Potato & Leek Soup
Creamy Potato & Leek Soup

The Lunch set has limited selection of Mains. It comes with a soup of the day and a can drink. How I wish they could have an option of dessert instead of soup.

Soup of the day was Creamy Potato & Leek Soup, if I am not wrong. It has a strong potato taste with lightly leek flavour and rather creamy too. But I think, some may find it a little too salty.

Monterey Jack Chicken Cheese
Monterey Jack Chicken Cheese

The plating of the Monterey Jack Chicken Cheese was comparable to the restaurant standard. The portion size was just nice for me. I was glad that it wasn’t huge. The Chicken has a strong BBQ sauce flavour. If you are a fan of BBQ sauce, I am sure you would like it. The dice fresh tomato provide a little tanginess to the dish. It was a pity that they uses Breast meat, the part that I dislike most. The mash potato was notable. It was smooth and creamy. I enjoyed it very much.

Chicken Talk Kitchen has some pastries and cakes made inhouse, such as the fruit tart and chocolate and pear pastry, others are from their supplier. I will want to try the made in-house ones the next time. I was keen with their Soft-shell Burgers as well. Another item for the next trip.

Bucktile St Cafe In Faberhills Apartment Along Faber Drive

Bucktile St Cafe is cloistered in a landed property estate. The cafe is at the ground floor of Faberhills Apartment along Faber Drive and it is next to the AYE. According to the cafe, the name is an anagram derived from Bucket List.

I didn’t find it difficult to get there. Pretty accessible from the AYE bus stop, within 5 minutes of walk I arrived at the cafe.

Faberhills Apartment
Faberhills Apartment

The cafe offers beyond pastries and cakes. The menu is almost 20 pages thick though it is at A3 size, printed only on 1 side with only words and no photos.  I think it is too complicated. If you are keen to view their menu, click here.

The cafe is very much simple. I like to think of it as some European, some vintage mixed, a little like a home too. You can view more of the cafe via Bucktile St’s Instagram account @bucktile.st. It has a pretty big space, definitely good for group hangout.

I was at the cafe for tea, after lunch so planning to have cakes and coffee. There was quite some selection over the display counter with cakes like Carrot Cakes, Blue Velvet Cakes, (I like the vibrant blue colour), Earl Grey Cakes, Rainbow Cakes and a few more which I can’t remember.

Earl Grey Cake
Earl Grey Cake

After much contemplation, as all the cakes look so enticing, I ordered an Earl Grey Cake and a Cappuccino.

The Earl Grey Cake has a rich Earl Grey fragrance. The cake layers were dense and moist. I tasted some coconut shred in the cake too. It was quite well done though I would prefer a little less cream. Maybe a three layers or even two would be great.

My Cappuccino
My Cappuccino

The coffee was decent with a full body, high aroma and acidity. It has some spice hint.

Personally, I think Bucktile St Cafe is after all a fine choice for coffee and cakes.
