Gattopardo Ristorante di Mare At Tras Street, Tanjong Pagar

We were supposed to dine at Gattopardo Ristorante di Mare during the Singapore Restaurant Week 2015 but 2 out of 3 couldn’t make it so ended by a week late.

Gattopardo Ristorante helmed by Chef Lino Sauro offers Contemporary Italian and Mediterranean cuisine. For the menu, click here.

Crispy Pasta with Mayonnaise Sauce and Cherry Tomato

Crispy Pasta with Mayonnaise Sauce and Cherry Tomato
Crispy Pasta with Mayonnaise Sauce and Cherry Tomato

We were served the crispy pasta as the starter. After deep frying, the pasta was a little chewy instead of crispy; I wasn’t impressed with the starter. The sauce was a little too simple, pure Mayonnaise Sauce. I was expecting some more sophisticated. Nonetheless, I wasn’t disappointed about what was next to come.

Starter

Burrata e 5J Jabugo

Burrata e 5J Jabugo (Fresh Burrata Cheese, Bruschetta and Jabugo)
Burrata e 5J Jabugo (Fresh Burrata Cheese, Bruschetta and Jabugo)

We ordered two starters for sharing. First, the Fresh Burrata Cheese, Bruschetta and Jabugo. We love this starter. Burrata Cheese was fresh and together with the Bruschetta was pretty refreshing.

Polipo

Polipo (Charred Octopus, Sicilian Olives, Sun Dried Tomatoes and Celery Root)
Polipo (Charred Octopus, Sicilian Olives, Sun Dried Tomatoes and Celery Root)

Next, was the Charred Octopus, Sicilian Olives, Sun Dried Tomatoes and Celery Root. These were tender Octopus that was sweetish and flavourful. The flavour was infused well onto the surface of Octopus. Amazing!

Mains

A total of three Mains were ordered for sharing, likewise.

Zuppa di Pesce “Gattopardo”

Zuppa di Pesce "Gattopardo" (Signature Gattopardo Seafood Stew in a Terracotta Pot)
Zuppa di Pesce “Gattopardo” (Signature Gattopardo Seafood Stew in a Terracotta Pot)

First, the Signature Gattopardo Seafood Stew was served. As we requested for sharing, they have kindly served us in three individual portions. The soup was simply amazing. The tangy tomato was refreshing but wasn’t the main featured taste, instead each mouthful was filled with a strong fish flavour. It was simply Awesome. I highly recommend this dish to all.

Tagliatelle con Aragosta

Tagliatelle con Aragosta (Tagliatelle with Spicy 'Live' Maine Lobster and Coriander)
Tagliatelle con Aragosta (Tagliatelle with Spicy ‘Live’ Maine Lobster and Coriander)

It was followed closely by our 2 pasta dishes. From the look, we felt it looked so much like Mee Pok. This was relatively light in flavour as compared to the 2 other Mains, the Stew and the Lasagna, which is next.

Lasagna Aperta con Wagyu e Finferli

Lasagna Aperta con Wagyu e Finferli (Homemade 'Open' Lasagna with Wagyu Beef Ragu and Chanterelle Mushroom)
Lasagna Aperta con Wagyu e Finferli (Homemade ‘Open’ Lasagna with Wagyu Beef Ragu and Chanterelle Mushroom)

Don’t be fooled by its simplistic look. It was outstanding. Usually for Lasagna, you will taste the strong tomato sauce but this you will get the strong flavour of beef instead. But I believe some may find this too meaty. Nevertheless, we enjoyed this to the max. This is another must try dish that I will recommend.

Dessert

Lastly, it was dessert time. We ordered 2 for sharing.

Tiramisu non Classico

Tiramisu non Classico (Soft Deconstructed Tiramisu)
Tiramisu non Classico (Soft Deconstructed Tiramisu)

The Tiramisu was indeed deconstructed, each component of the Tiramisu was separate independently. I still prefer the ‘Constructed’ Tiramisu instead with Coffee and alcohol soaked sponge together with the Mascarpone Cheese

Semifreddo di Lino

Semifreddo di Lino (Chef Lino's Signature Almond Parfait with Toasted 'Noto' Almond Sauce)
Semifreddo di Lino (Chef Lino’s Signature Almond Parfait with Toasted ‘Noto’ Almond Sauce)

We find the Almond Parfait a little too sweet and I couldn’t taste much of the Almond flavour in the sauce.

In general, we didn’t enjoy the dessert as much as the Starters and the Mains. I might forgo the dessert when I dine at Gattopardo the next round. Maybe I will not but try something else. Lol!

More Ice Cream Parlour in Town, Plus39 Gelato Bar and Everton Creamery

Plus39 Gelato Bar and Everton Creamery opened around the same period though at different location. I tried both, not on the same day but with the same week and I must say, both are awesome though not cheap.

Chocolate and Manago with Chestnut sauce
Chocolate and Manago with Chestnut sauc

The gelato is extremely smooth and creamy and it doesn’t feel airy too. In totality, well balance. The texture alone “Wow” me. The gelato is also packed with flavour and tasted so natural, though a little too sweet for my palette.

Interior
Interior

Plus39 Gelato Bar has both dine-in and takeaway at different prices. You can opt for 1 to 3 scoops cup. For dine-in, you get a choice of sauce or topping too which is not available for takeaway. There are a total of 8 flavours each day for your selection. There are unique flavours such as Chocolate Chilli and Chocolate Ginger if you are adventurous.

Matcha and Cheesecake Gelato
Matcha and Cheesecake Gelato

The gelato offered by Everton Creamery though may not be as smooth as Plus39 but it is certainly part of the excellent class. I tried both the Gelato and Sorbet, both are equally good.

Everton Creamery is a pure gelato parlour with no other offers, at least for now. There were a good selection of about a dozen of flavours though none unique flavours on the deck but taste very outstanding. They don’t offer much seats within their premise, very much for takeaway.

Violet Herbs At Tras Street Tanjong Pagar

When I got the news of Violet Herbs Modern European Restaurant was opened by the former Ember Restaurant Chef, it got me excited as we always enjoyed the food served from the Ember Restaurant’s kitchen. Without verifying the news, I informed my cousin immediately and instantly (almost), in his Whatapps message, he replied “It wasn’t by the Sebastian something”. I was some what disappointed. And he continued, “It’s still worth trying”. I have the same sentiment. I went ahead for lunch without him first. I couldn’t wait.

Interior
Interior

Violet Herbs Modern European Restaurant, with a contemporary setting, occupied a two-level shop house along Tras Street, Tanjong Pagar area, whereby lots of awesome restaurants gathered. It has lots of violet furniture which attributed some funky factor in the design. That’s very much how I feel.

The one thing that I really love about Violet Herb is the affordable weekday set (lunch and dinner). The 3-course weekday set lunch is priced at $29.50+++ per person while the 4-course weekday set dinner is also at an attractive price of $42+++ per person. I don’t usually state the price but it is such a good deal and I must highlight. If you prefer, you can go for its 6- or 8- course degustation set. For the menu, click here.

Herb Bread with Butter
Herb Bread with Butter

After I placed my order, I was served with a warm bun-like looking bread with a side butter. It has a relatively strong herb smell which I enjoyed and without doubt, it was soft and fluffy.

Oyster with Vinegar
Oyster with Vinegar

It was followed by the Oyster with Vinegar, fresh and tasty and no fishy-like taste. Probably it was well masked by the vinegar.

Lunch Set, Appetizer: Pan Seared Foie Gras (Orange Segments, Chilli Candies, Dehydrated Orange, Orange Reduction)
Lunch Set, Appetizer: Pan Seared Foie Gras (Orange Segments, Chilli Candies, Dehydrated Orange, Orange Reduction)

For the Appetizer, you have the option of the Foie Gras (with an additional charge of $5) or the remaining choices. I went for Pan Seared Foie Gras with Orange Segments, Chilli Candies, Dehydrated Orange and Orange Reduction). The Foie Gras simply melted in the mouth.

Lunch Set, Main: Chicken Roulade & Lobster Mousse(with Semi Dried Tomato On Vine, Sauteed Haricot Vert, Poached Potatoes, Jus Gras
Lunch Set, Main: Chicken Roulade & Lobster Mousse(with Semi Dried Tomato On Vine, Sauteed Haricot Vert, Poached Potatoes, Jus Gras

Next, my mains. I opted for the Chicken Roulade & Lobster Mousse (with Semi Dried Tomato On Vine, Sauteed Haricot Vert, Poached Potatoes and Jus Gras). This is a lighter dish, good for diners with lighter palate. Personally, I prefer stronger flavoured dish. Nevertheless, this is still a delish dish.

Lunch Set, Dessert: Apple Strudel
Lunch Set, Dessert: Apple Strudel

Lastly, the dessert. I have the Apple Strudel in Filo Pastry with Thyme Ice Cream, Cherry and Toffee Sauce. This was my favourite part of the meal, as always. The pastry was so crispy and the apple was still very crunchy and the entire dish was only slight sweetish though Toffee sauce was used. And it paired perfectly with the lightly thyme flavoured ice cream. I could accept the ice cream even if it is slightly stronger in Thyme aroma.

My conclusion is, Violet Herbs is a restaurant worthy of visit. Luckily, I came and try that was what I thought to myself after the lunch. And I can’t wait to have dinner there soon!

Selfish Gene Patisserie At Craig Road Tanjong Pagar

Selfish Gene Patisserie is a brand created by folks of Selfish Gene Cafe and it is perched above Selfish Gene Cafe. The stairs leading to the Patisserie can be found on the right of the cafe.

With the word “Patisserie”, I thought they were offering cakes, I didn’t expect that they were serving plated desserts. Some have termed it as deconstructed dessert, but I still prefer the former name.

Menu
Menu

The cafe has a little Zen ambience, rather comforting and peaceful.

A total of 7 plated desserts were found on Selfish Gene Patisserie’s Menu. I was informed by the service crew that the lightest in taste was on top and it progresses to the strongest in flavour at the bottom. But I would prefer to describe it as the sourish are on top while the sweetest at the top. Beside the plated dessert, of course beverages are on the menu with tea, coffee and a few crafted beer as the highlight. The service crew has advised me that the desserts goes better with tea than coffee. So I heeded the advice on my first visit when I ordered the “Ginger”.

Ginger
Ginger

The “Ginger” consisted of a ginger cake, soft and moist with a subtle ginger fragrance. On the top was a well of toffee sauce and by the side was a scoop of homemade Caramel Ice Cream that paired nicely with the cake and were not overwhelming. The crumbles provided a crunchy texture to the dish. If you prefer more ginger flavour, munch the Ginger Soft Candy either together with the cake and ice cream or at the end (which was what I did). I am not a ginger fan but I find this dessert more than acceptable. But I believe, some may find this a little too sweet.

Oolong Tea
Oolong Tea

I paired the Ginger with a Oolong Tea. The Oolong Tea has a subtle sweetness that goes well with the dessert.

Soya
Soya

On my second visit, I was recommended the Soya as the service crew said that this is something unique. I was curious to find out what was the selling point.

In this creation, there were a Matcha Ice Cream, a Tofu Cheesecake with a dashes of Red Miso together with Red Beans, Mochi and Crumbles scattered around the cake and ice cream. The uniqueness is the briny Red Miso on the Cheesecake which is akin to Salted Gula Melaka or you may prefer Salted Caramel. You need to spread it across so that the Red Miso won’t dominate the taste. The red bean was only sweetish and with the crumbles and mochi, it went really well for the dessert. It would have been perfect if the Tofu Cheesecake is smoother and the Matcha Ice Cream has a stronger Green Tea flavour.

Lemon
Lemon

And on my third visit, I tried the Lemon. I was worried that it might be too sourish but it turned out perfect for me. The lemon curd went well with the cake and crumble. It resembled a Lemon Cake. The Toasted Marshmallow by the side provided some sweetness and different texture to the dish.

Coconut
Coconut

My forth visit was with a friend, so I managed to tried 2 more creation, the Coconut and the Chocolate. Among the 2, I prefer the latter.

The Coconut has a Coconut Panna Cotta and Red Bean Ice Cream as the main ingredients and together with Green Jelly, Toasted Coconut Grates and Gula Melaka. The Red Bean is a little too strong and it masked all the flavours. The Coconut Panna Cotta has a nice coconut aroma and it went very well with the Gula Melaka.

Chocolate
Chocolate

In the Chocolate, there was a Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Ganache (make up of both dark and milk chocolate). As always, the pair, orange and chocolate were excellent partners.

I am left with 2 more and I complete the menu. I will update the post when I do.

Drizzle N Frost, Cupcakes Specialty Cake Store At Orchid Hotel

Presenting the Drizzle N Frost, a cupcake store at Orchid Hotel. Orchid Hotel is full of good eats, from Japanese Food, Gyoza King  & Teppei, Hana Hana to Sandwiches, Souper Sarnies to the Cake Shop, Cake Spade, and now one more addition, Drizzle N Frost

Interior
Interior

When I stepped into Drizzle N Frost, I feel that it is very pink as the first object that caught my sight was the narrow shocking pink side table seated in a single file, good for as many as eight (I didn’t count, it is my estimation). Next, that attracted me, of course are the goodies in Drizzle N Frost, the lovely cupcakes.

Drizzle N Frost, beside cupcakes, made some tarts. The variety of bakes aren’t as array but pretty attractive. I went for their cupcakes this round, reserving the tarts for next visit.

I got a box of six for takeaway. Since there were only 6 different flavours of cupcakes, naturally I got one each for the box of six. Due to the promotion, every six cupcake purchase, there are two free. I decided to have it there. I chose Rochertella and Earl Grey Lavender with Blueberry White Tea to go along.

My Dine In, Rochertella, Earl Grey Lavender and Blueberry White Tea
My Dine In, Rochertella, Earl Grey Lavender and Blueberry White Tea

I started with the Earl Grey Lavender. The Earl Grey Lavender fragrance was just right when eating the cake alone. When it is eaten together with the white chocolate of the cream, the Earl Grey flavour is kind of masked. So some may find that the Earl Grey flavour is not strong enough. I don’t mind if the Earl Grey flavour is slightly stronger. I like the centre core; there is a cream in it. And especially the crunchy Caramel Varlhona Dulcel Pearls. It complement very well with the Earl Grey Lavender cake base.

The Rochertella is great as well. I like the not so overwhelming chocolaty cake base, the nutella center and the Rocher that gave the crunch. My sister tried it too and she loves it

I wanted to try the Tipsy Geisha which as Sake but my Dad took that, I will return to get one and try the next time.

After trying 50% out of the six available flavours, the cupcake base is generally soft, not too dense (and not too airy) and lightly moist and lightly flavoured (not overwhelming). So if you like your cupcake this way, you will like Drizzle N Frost.

5 The Moments, Ice Cream Parlour At Tajong Pagar

One more Ice Parlour is added to the growing number in Singapore.

 Ice Cream Counter
Ice Cream Counter

I was excited when I spotted this ice cream parlour along Tanjong Pagar. It’s in between my work place and home. I can pop by on my way home when I crave for ice cream. Lol. Without doubt I will certainly give it a try.

Hazelnut Single Scoop
Hazelnut Single Scoop

After trying several flavours, I settled for the Hazelnut. The ice cream resembles gelato texture. It is slightly chewy, smooth, creamy and milky. The taste of the flavours is more concentrated and focus. So you tend to get a stronger fragrance. Some of the ice cream is pretty sweet, especially so for the coconut.

As all ice cream parlour, they too offer waffles, I will try it at my next trip. And some coffee.

5 The Moment seems to deliver some mix of local and Europe Vintage style in the cafe. I like the chairs they placed in the cafe, very cushy and comfortable.

Since it is near both my home and workplace, and it is serving pretty good ice cream, I will return for more.

Ikkousha Hakata Ramen At Tanjong Pagar

The Tanjong Pagar outlet of Ikkousha Hakata Ramen always attract a queue during lunch time. As I am craving for ramen today so I decided to join the queue. But since I was alone so I got a seat right after I joined the queue.

Ikkousha Hakata Ramen Restaurant Interior
Ikkousha Hakata Ramen Restaurant Interior

The area is pretty spacious. It has a typical Japanese design. Once you entered the restaurant, you will see the big communal table.

Order Sheet
Order Sheet

Most of the diners will start filling out the order sheet when they are in the queue but as I did not have time to do so and I fill the seat at the comfort of my seat. If you have no idea what’s on the sheet, you can ask for the menu with pictures.

There are six different soup base to choose from. If you like spicy, go for God Fire. You can even choose the spice level from 1 to 4. I suppose 1 being the mildest and 4 being the strongest. Next you can customise per you preference with the noodle texture, taste, extra toppings or with extra noodles.

I chose Tonkotsu soup based with normal noodle texture and Japanese Taste. And I added a flavour egg (with a soft yolk). I have no idea what’s Japanese Taste is about but just went ahead and try. If you check-in to facebook, you get your flavour egg free.

On the table, you can find many different condiment and basket of hard boiled egg. You can have as many as you want. During lunch hours, rice is free and you can have as many bowls you want, like the hard boiled egg.

Tonkutsu Ramen
Tonkutsu Ramen

It took them quite a while to serve the ramen. I added some sesame into my bowl of ramen. The soup was not extremely rich, medium flavoured and not salty like most ramen. The slice of pretty big pork chashu is soft and tender, melt in the mouth. It has a rich pork flavour. As I have no ground to compare the normal taste ramen to so I still have no idea what’s the different in taste is like.

Final thoughts? I will return for the normal taste ramen the next time.
