Chef Lu’s La Mian At Kopitiam Vivocity

Chef Lu’s La Mian at the Vivocity, Kopitiam, offers only fresh handmade noodles. I was first attracted to this stall by a bowl of Dry Spicy Handmade Noodle that my colleague was having a week ago at Kopitiam, Vivocity. It looked so amazing. When I was back the next round, without hesitation, I know I must order that for lunch.

Stall no. 17, Chef Lu’s La Mian, at Kopitiam, made each bowl of noodles fresh only upon ordering. You could admire the Chef performing the art while waiting for your lovely bowl of fresh noodles. Chef Lu’s La Mian offers 7 selections, with different ingredients with only noodles. It is a shame that both the Xiao Long Bao and Guo Tie were not available.

Spicy Shredded Pork La Mian
Spicy Shredded Pork La Mian

From the look of the Spicy Shredded Pork La Mian ($5.50), it looked very spicy, but not at all. The noodle used in this bowl of delight is the broad flat type. It is sat on a pile of beansprouts together with some green leafy vegetables and a few cubes of braised pork. And very generous amount of vinegar were added. Toss them well and you are ready to grub it down.

Chef Specialty Braised Minced Meat La Mian

On the second occasion, I tried the Chef Specialty Braised Minced Meat La Mian ($4.50). For this bowl, the thin noodles were used instead. I like the tasty minced bean which was enough for the noodles. I don’t mind if I could have a little more of the minced meat. Likewise, toss it and slurp it.

Beef La Mian Soup
Beef La Mian Soup

I felt a need to try the Soup noodle too so I went for Beef La Mian Soup ($6.00). The slice beef was excellent. It melt in the mouth and noodle likewise. If you do not like soft noodle, you need to consume it as soon as you can. I didn’t quite like the soup, it tasted like the instance noodle soup. So may, it is an indication of a significant amount of MSG added. I am not sensitive to MSG, so no adverse reaction after drinking some of the soup.

The food whipped up at Chef Lu’s La Mian stall is fresh and delicious and value for money, especially the dry version. And surprisingly, it wasn’t the salty kind of food, unlike how most PRC Chef would prepared it.

Taste Better, Durian Puff and Durian Soft Serve At Vivo City

I spotted Taste Better when I was on my way to Giant Hypermart at Vivo City. I was lured by them as they were selling Durian Puff. I couldn’t resist the charm but to stop by to try their product. They were very generous, they gave one whole Durian Puff for customer to try. Wow!!

Vivocity Outlet

Taste Better is based out of Johor Bahru, Malaysia with outlets not only in their home country but also in China and Indonesia. Vivo City is their first outlet in Singapore. They have a number of products; One-bite Puffs, Soft Serves, Smoothies and Coffee & Tea. Currently, at their Vivo City outlet, there are only Durian Puffs and Durian Soft Serve.

Durian Puffs
Durian Puffs

It is called One-Bite Puff as they wanted consumer to have it in one mouth because if you don’t the Durian cream will ooze out and stain your entire lips, but it is too big for my mouth. The Durian cream is rather flavourful with a more liquid consistency and light in texture. The choux pastry is also fluffy and moist.  Taste Better is selling the Puff in a box of fours.

Durian Soft Serve
Durian Soft Serve

Currently, for their opening special, they are giving a free Durian Soft Serve with every 2 boxes of puff purchased. I couldn’t give this a missed to try the Soft Serve. Verdict? The soft serve isn’t very smooth in texture but still considerably decent and was with a good amount of Durian flavour. I did enjoy nevertheless.

Oh ya, I almost forgot to mention that they baked the pastry fresh daily at the kiosk.

Out Of The Cake Box At Telok Blangah Drive

Out Of The Cake Box, another shop that opened on 18 Oct. Is that day a golden day for opening on the Almanac? Besides Pacamara Boutique Coffee Roasters and Out of The Cake Box, there were a number of other cafe that opens its door on that day. What an interesting phenomenon?!

Menu

Out Of The Cake Box is currently for mainly take away. Located near the MRT station and a bus stop, makes it convenient for patrons. For those who know Marshmallow Cafe, it is on the next block.

I have been following their Facebook closely for their opening date as the cakes in the photo on their Facebook looks so delish. It was so tempting. I can’t wait for them to their start business. The wait is now over. I went down to get some of their cakes on their first day of business.

My take away consist of the Gnome Dome (Espresso), the Horlick flavour was sold out, the Lemon Tart, Chendol Fudge Cake, something unique, and the Chicago Styled Cheesecake.

My Take Away, from top left, clockwise: Gnome Dome (Espresso), Lemon Tart, Chicago-styled Cheesecake & Chendol Fudge Cake

The first I tried was the Lemon Tart. The Lemon Tart supposed to come with a jelly like layer but somehow it came off while on my trip home. So I ate it without the layer. The lemon curd was creamy and a little sourish.

I like the choux pastry of the Gnome Dome. It was very superb. There were some small chocolate chunk on in the coffee cream that enhance the texture. The coffee flavour was lightly scented.

As always, Cheesecake was reserved for my brother so I didn’t try. The Chendol Fudge Cake was the last I tried, leaving the best for the last. There was a good amount of the Gula Melaka flavour and sparingly red bean and the green jelly like in the cake. The creation was unique.

I will return for the Cheesecake soon.

Old Habits Cafe At Telok Blangah Rise, Very Vintage

Old Habits Cafe located Telok Blangah Rise is a very vintage cafe. Great News for Vintage, Retrolicious Fans, one more Vintage Cafe added to the cafe scene. Indeed.

Old Habits Cafe has lots of very vintage ornaments decorating the cafe. Even some of the furniture are vintage.

Old Habits Cafe does not offer a wide selection of food, nevertheless a pretty good choices. They are one of the cafe which has a great range of tea selection beside the usual coffee.

I ordered my favourite Cappuccino and Tiramisu. I was disappointed with presentation for both the coffee and dessert as there wasn’t Latte Art on the coffee and the Tiramisu was served in a plastic cup.

Cappuccino and Tiramisu
Cappuccino and Tiramisu

Despite the presentation, the coffee and tiramisu was more than decent. The coffee has a medium body and pretty low acidity with nutty, chocolaty hint. The tiramisu has a pretty good balance of both the cheese and cake. Most importantly, the cake was soaked with enough espresso and alcohol.

Old Habit Cafe is great for diners to hang out and reminisce about the vintage era. Oh ya, maybe they could even identify some of the toys they played during childhood.

On The Table At Pasir Panjang, Presented By The Lola’s Cafe

On The Table (OTT) at Pasir Panjang is opened by the team behind The Lola’s Cafe. When I got to know about it, I was pretty excited as I like everything about Lola’s Cafe at Simon Road. Most importantly, it is nearer to me. I was looking forward to pop by.

On The Table (OTT) has a very different theme from the Lola’s Cafe. OTT has an industrial feel, cemented wall and floor, the entire cafe looks and feel so cold. There were lots of wooden chairs painted mainly in the sunshine yellow colour, resulting a little more cheerful in the mood.

Though OTT opened as early as 8am, they don’t served food until 11am on weekdays and 10am on weekends. You can find some simple cakes and muffin and beverages during the early hours.

Hummingbird Cake
Hummingbird Cake

There were 3 types of cakes served; Chocolate Brownie, Hummingbird Cake and Raspberry Lemon Curd Muffin. I opted for the latter.

Raspberry Lemon Curd Muffin
Raspberry Lemon Curd Muffin

The Raspberry Lemon Curd Muffin was awesome. It has a good balance of sweetish and sourish taste. A good amount of Raspberry in the muffin too. The Lemon Curd was so good. I realized until I finished the first half of the muffin. It tasted even better when you spread the lemon curd on the top of the muffin and eat it together. The lemon flavour and raspberry flavour blended prefectly together. A must try for any one who likes sweetish sourish tangy berry cakes. It was yummy.

Upside-down Latte Art for Right Handed
Upside-down Latte Art for Right Handed

My coffee, a Cappuccino, once again was served with an upside-down latte art for a right handed. The coffee has a medium body, low acidity. A little nutty hint and lots of citrus flavour notes.

I was comparing the menu of Lola’s and On The Table, there were some similar dishes with a different name and some new dishes in the menu of On The Table.

Food and coffee-wise, the standard of OTT is similar to Lola’s. A great alternative for the cafe-hoppers in the West.
