Family Dinner At Casa Verde @ Singapore Botanic Gardens

We decided to have dinner together on the day of Cookies’ staycation. My sister suggested to have dinner at Casa Verde at the Singapore Botanic Gardens since they allowed pets. Moreover, she has visited a few times previously and find the food to be good. Since Casa Verde is by Les Amis Group, I am confident that the food will not disappoint us, but something else did.

When we arrived at the restaurant at about 6.10pm, we asked for a table for 5 and were told that we need to wait for about 45 minutes as all the tables were reserved. And so we turned around to inform our folks and we spoke in our dialect, Teochew. When the waiter heard that we didn’t speak English, very quickly, without hesitation, in a very arrogant tone, he informed us that the restaurant only serves Italian food and no normal food. These were his exact words. In fact, we were rather offended. But since we have a pet, to change a restaurant it was tough too, so we decided to wait as from our experiences, the restaurant will usually state a longer waiting time. My sister left her mobile number and her name as “Mia” on the waiting list and we hung around the restaurant to wait.

After approximately 5 minutes of wait, the restaurant manager called my sister mobile and we got our seats. We were quite lucky at the start. On hindsight, I think the manager might have thought “Mia” was a foreigner.

Casa Verde has a pretty standard Italian fare so you can find Pizza, Pasta, some meat & seafood, starters, soup and desserts from the menu.

A basket of bread was served without refill. We finished them even before the first dish was served. We waited for quite long, I think a good 15 minutes. We were expecting the Antipasti to be served first, since they did not ask how we would like the sequence of the food to be served and so on. Instead, we served the pasta, Aglio Olio E Pepperoncin, as our first dish. It was a garlicky pasta. We enjoy the pasta except for my brother-in-law who finds the garlic over-powdering.

At the second dish, the Antipasti was still not served but the Secondi, Pollo Al Mattan, was served. This is a Char-grilled Baby Spring Chicken served with beans and creamy roasted potato dauphinois. Everyone at the dinner table enjoyed this dish. It was absolutely tasty.

By now, we were quite upset about not having the Antipasti, so I asked the waiter to check and serve us the Antipasti Misti. The serving was meant for 2 persons. This was a lovely dish too with nice grilled vegetables and a good mix of cheese and cold cuts.

Lastly, the Pizza Parma Ham e Rocket Salad was served. The entire dish wasn’t as salty as some others. The bread base was thin and cheese was abundant.

Most of us felt that we could have more food, so we added a Carbonara. Most of us in the family doesn’t quite like tomato based pasta so a cream based one would suit the palate of the family. The Carbonara was a little more sweetish than briny. It was rich and lots of chopped bacon were added as toppings.

After all our Mains were completed, we were expecting the service crew to come up to us to ask if we wanted our dessert but this didn’t happen. We chatted for about 10 minutes and were getting inpatient so we tried to get hold of a crew but was in vain. They seems to be only interested to serve the foreigners but to the local they ignored. Only after numerous attempts, a service crew stopped by and we got our Tiramisu finally. It was pretty awesome.

As we made the payment and I started standing up to take my leave. My action was spotted by the restaurant manager and immediately she shouted loudly to her staff to ask if we paid. And this action really offended us. We expected that you check with the staff discretely and not in such a rude manner.

Our dinner ended at about 8.30pm, during our time there for about 2 hours, we observed how the crew treated the patrons and our observation results were consistent among the family members. They treated the foreigners well. They are the one who got the seats first even when they came later, while the local has to wait. We also notice that there were lots of empty seats in the indoor seats but they still make the local without pets waited for seats. It was rather sad and uncalled for.

According to my sister, their service was better previously when it was some other manager helming the restaurant. With a change, the service level declined.

In a nutshell, food was awesome but service sucks. Delish food and acceptable service level should come hand in hand. Either element missing will spoil the entire dinning experience, which in this case, it was the service that does so.

Sunday Folks @ Chip Bee Gardens Serving Soft Serve Ice Cream

Creamier is now turning to Soft Serve Ice Cream with the opening of Sunday Folks, at a hipster area, Holland Village. And to be specific, it is at Chip Bee Gardens. Unlike their first venture which is at a quiet neighbourhood. This new venture seems to be they are really into attracting the young crowd.

When I arrived at the shop, I was taken aback to find the cafe crowded with a queue on a weekday afternoon. I was planning to enjoy the waffle with a soft serve but my original plan has to be changed to takeaway.

Menu
Menu

After browsing the one page menu, with six flavour of soft serve ice cream to choose from, I was indecisive between the Earl Grey Lavender and the Sea Salt Gula Melaka. Somehow Sea Salt Gula Melaka has more charm and I was won over by it.

I was given a number cone after I was done with my ordering at the counter. The wait was quite a while and finally, my takeaway cone was served to me.

My Takeaway, Sea Salt Gula Melaka Soft Serve Cone

The Sea Salt Gula Melaka was lightly in flavour with very light amount of saltiness and very light gula melaka flavoured. I like the mochi and the sesame crisp. Initially, I thought the dark brown coloured cone was a chocolate flavoured cone but it doesn’t taste like there was chocolate. The texture of the cone is like the belgium biscuit wafer and it wasn’t too sweet.

On another occasion, I was craving for soft serve ice cream, so I went down to try their Earl Grey Lavender. The Earl Grey aroma is far too light. I would have preferred it to be a little stronger.

The soft serve ice cream is as good as the Creamier ice cream. It was as good as expected. Hopefully, when returned, I will find a seat so that I could enjoy it with their signature waffle. And I hope they could have matcha flavour in future too.

The Milky Way Homemade Ice Cream and Coffee At Tanglin Halt

Yet another ice cream cafe entering the scene, The Milky Way. This ice cream cafe is located at Tanglin Halt. Among the old traditional shop, in the centre is this modern looking cafe.

Cafe Front

The cafe specialises in homemade ice cream. There are waffles, tea and coffee served as well. Each week they rotate their various different flavours. It has a very homely feel in the design. For the menu, click here.

Various Flavours Available

I was informed by the crew that their signature is the Pistachio but I was never a fan of Pistachio so I skipped this totally. I tried a few flavours before settling for the Strawberry Cheesecake. In general, the ice cream is on the sweeter end. Somehow, this is one other ice cream that has a sweet distinct taste separated from its flavour. Not sure why. The first I tried was Earl Grey. I find the Earl Grey too strong and so much so till it tasted a little artificial. Next was Hazelnut, I didn’t like it either.

My Order, Strawberry Cheesecake

Finally the Strawberry Chessecake was to my liking. As the sour strawberry helps to balance out the sweetness.

The Milky Way is a good addition to this sunset neighbourhood. It will certainly add some vibes. As for the ice cream, I think there is room for improvement.

The Fat Cat Bistro At Holland Village, Singapore, Serving Three Different Cuisines

My lunch today was at The Fat Cat Bistro at Holland Village, though my original plan was to lunch at the newly open Three Buns by The Potato Head folks along Keong Saik Street, that serves the most talked about in town burgers. This was due to one of our colleague was moving back to India, one of them decided to give him a last treat for lunch before he headed back to India and I was asked along. And so I agreed to the invitation. My colleague found out that our Indian colleague have never been to Holland Village while he was in Singapore for the past two years.

As we were roaming around Holland Village, we stumbled upon The Fat Cat, serving Indian, Thai and Western Cuisine and our Indian colleague chose The Fat Cat as it was serving Indian food. It was a wise choice regarding food, no regret on the food, something, not so pleasant happen though.

The interior of The Fat Cat Bistro is cosy though simple.

Set Lunch Menu
Set Lunch Menu

They were serving set lunch. There were two options, two courses (one starter and one main) and three courses (two starter and one main). There were a few choices for both the starter and main. The three of us opted for the two courses set lunch. As I was interested to try all the starter, I suggested that we each order one different starter. They agreed.

Mantra Chicken Wing
Mantra Chicken Wing

We ended having the Mantra Chicken, Thai Spring Roll and Mushroom Soup as starter. By the way, the Mantra Chicken comes in a pair of wings, but you are seeing only one in the photo as one dropped into my warm water (which they charging 50 cents). The water splashed all over the table and onto me. The staff was apologetic though. She reached out to the nearest piece of serviette, that was on the next table, and started wiping off the water. Instead of wiping the water away from me, she wiped towards me and the water started dripping off from the table and onto my dress. I made a noise and she was oblivious toward it. Sigh. Luckily, it was plain water and not anything like like red wine. It would have been a disaster and I would have been very upset. And next, very quickly, she removed the cup of water and then she forgotten to bring me a new cup of warm water and I have to walk to her and remind her. Another sigh.

Thai Spring Roll
Thai Spring Roll

So much so for the incident, back to the food. The Mantra Chicken was very tasty and crispy. Excellent.

Mushroom Soup
Mushroom Soup

The spring roll though delicious, especially the sauce. It was sweet and sour, spicy and briny. The but here is, it wasn’t well fried. The one that I ate the skin of the spring roll was filled with oil.

As for the Mushroom soup, very mushroomy. I mean lots of finely chopped mushrooms and flavour. It was not too creamy, more on the soupy side.

Butter Chicken
Butter Chicken

Both my two colleagues ordered the Butter Chicken with basmati rice. I tasted the butter chicken too. It was delicious too. The butter chicken was a lighter version from the one served in the usual Indian restaurant. Surprisingly, my Indian colleague loved it. I thought he would find it a little too light for his palate.

Minced Chicken with Basil & Jasmine Rice
Minced Chicken with Basil & Jasmine Rice

I ordered something different from them. I ordered the Minced Chicken with Basil & Jasmine Rice. The minced chicken has a good amount of basil flavour. The first few spoonful of minced chicken that I took, I find that the spiciness level was still pretty acceptable. The more I ate, the spiciness built up in the mouth and soon I found myself tearing. So my advice for eating this dish is to go really slow and for those who don’t have high spice tolerance, either avoid this dish or ask for less spicy.  One other reason why I like the dish was it was fried with some greens, long beans.

We were glad that our Indian colleague enjoyed the food very much. Thanks to my other colleague for the treat despite a minor incident. Oh ya, I think they didn’t waive off my warm water as a way to offer the apology. All these, in my opinion, indicate the service level they are providing.

Our verdict, great food. My additional comment, there are still rooms for improvement for their service.
