Toothsome Cafe At Tanjong Katong Road

You find a new cafe opened every other day. One more to Tanjong Katong Road, Toothsome Cafe, after Do.main Bakery.

Toothsome Cafe is setup by the folks behind 8 Tarts and Pastry which you can find at Vivocity and Jems. This is their first cafe venture.

The cafe has a pretty simple setup and some what family friendly, with a kids corner set up for the kiddos.

Menu
Menu

The menu isn’t very exciting. You will find pasta and rice and burgers and some finger snacks. According to the cafe owner, they are still tuning the menu depending on how’s the respond in coming weeks. There are some 8 Tart and Pastry items offered in the cafe too.

Cappuccino
Cappuccino

When I saw my Cappuccino, the look gave away that it was dispensed from a fully automatic coffee machine. Usually, such coffee doesn’t taste good and I was skeptical and to my surprise, it was pretty decent; full body, low acidity and some nutty flavour notes. And the coffee was accompanied by a small handwritten motivation note. It was a lovely cup of coffee.

Perfect Pork Burger
Perfect Pork Burger

The Perfect Pork Burger was pretty awesome. There are three types of bun to choose from; the Charcoal Bun which is what I have, Sesame Bun and Multigrain Buns. The pork patty was tasty though a little too salty for me. And the fries, crispy with good potato flavours.

Oreo Cheescakes, Tiramisu and Macaroons, Hazelnut and Coffee
Oreo Cheescakes, Tiramisu and Macaroons, Hazelnut and Coffee

Unfortunately, the cakes and macaroons were such a let down. I got an Oreo Cheesecake, a Tiramisu and 2 mini maracoons (Hazelnut and Coffee) home for sharing. The comments were unanimously; They are not delish.

Toothsome Cafe serves pretty good Mains, at least that’s the case for the Burger I tried and decent coffee but for the cakes, definitely there are lots of rooms for improvement. They are also planning to offer wines and beer to the patrons soon.

Nitro Cream Ice Cream In Singapore

*This wordpress site has moved to www.nahmj.com. For the latest update, please refer to the link.

The first time I came across Nitro Cream Ice Cream was in Hong Kong. I was so impressed with the Nitrogen steam. It was so cool. In Singapore, there are a number of Nitro Cream Ice Cream Parlour too.

What exactly is Nitro Cream Ice Cream? Basically, instead of freezing the ice cream using a conventional ice cream maker, instead nitrogen was introduced as the freezing agent.

Ice Queen may not be the first Nitro-cream Ice Cream in Singapore but it was the first I tried. They have Single Scoop (without topping, pure ice cream only) or the Creations.

The ice cream was fabulous. It has a good mango flavour and not too sweet. While the sticky rice has a nice texture and with the coconut cream it enhanced the flavour.

As for the space, there isn’t any tables but a number of stools for customers to have a seat to enjoy their ice cream. The staff is fabulously friendly and warm.

I am definitely going back again for the rest of the creations/flavours

320 Below has so much of flavours, the regulars and premium. A total of over 30 flavours, I think.

I have the Chendol, it was so fantastic. It is as good as eating the Chendol. Yummy. No doubt, I will drop by again to try other flavours.

The Holqa Cafe At East Coast Road, Homely

The word Holqa is not in English language but in Maltese which means link. The Holqa Cafe is a new kid on the block along the stretch of shophouses at East Coast Road where all the famous and good eats gather. They started with a few days of soft launch before their official opening on 16 November.

Overview of Interior
Overview of Interior

Holqa Cafe has a very strategic location, as they are right in front of a bus stop. The cafe has only about 20 odd seating capacity, considerably small. The design is very much like home with small little ornaments and photos placed, making it much cosines feel.

As a cafe, there is definitely the standard coffee drinks with some other drinks such as tea (Allerines Tea, Milk Tea, Mango Tea, Iced Tea) among others. There is a varied food selection; pasta, brioche selection, sandwiches, burger, small bites and Egg Benedicts.

I was delighted to find a table of cakes and pastries which were all made in-house.

Asian Pulled Pork with 3 Cheeses
Asian Pulled Pork with 3 Cheeses

I was keen to try the Asian Pulled Pork with 3 Cheeses served on a Bagel with some Gingered Mayonnaise and spiced french fries as sides. It sounded extremely delish and rich. The portion was considerable big. It is a tasty dish contributed by the cheeses and Ginger Mayonnaise. It blended very well with the marinated pulled pork. The fries were lightly spiced with quite some potato taste. I enjoyed. It would be perfect if they have served with some salad.

Cappuccino
Cappuccino

The coffee is high in acidity, medium bodied with riped cherry and spiced flavour note. I would rate it as decent but not to my taste palette as I am not quite used to coffee with high acidity.

Cakes, From top to bottom: Earl Grey Citrus & Thai Milk Tea Pound Cakes
Cakes, From top to bottom: Earl Grey Citrus & Thai Milk Tea Pound Cakes

Since the cakes are made inhouse, I couldn’t resist not to try. I was in fact very full so I have them takeaway. All their cakes and pastries were very delish looking. I couldn’t quite decide what I wanted but randomly got the Earl Grey Citrus and Thai Milk Tea Pound Cake. The texture were soft and moderately dense and very flavourful. I like the Thai Milk Tea very much.

I am certain I will return specially for the cakes.

Refuel Cafe, Petrol Kiosk Themed Cafe At Bedok Reservoir

Refuel Cafe, established at Bedok Reservoir Road, has a very apt name and theme as humans need to refuel ourselves with food like the vehicles require refuel with petrol.

Menu
Menu

Not only is the decoration and the ornaments placed in the cafe, the theme is also extended into the menu with “Full Tank”, “Fuel ME Up” and etc.

For desserts, it wasn’t on the menu, neither was it on the display, but you need to look out for the list which is placed beside the cashier.

V-Power Passionfruit Soda
V-Power Passionfruit Soda

As it was a hot afternoon, and I need a cold iced drink so I ordered the V-Power Soda, Passionfruit. It was amazingly refreshing. The combination of the Passionfruit and oregano was fabulous.

Pulled Pork Burger
Pulled Pork Burger

For main, I ordered a Pulled Pork Burger which has shredded pork in BBQ sauce and topped off with lemonly slaw between a sesame bun. The combination was delectable. I like the dish as there was lots of vegetables.

When I was almost finishing, I was eating only the pork and the bun, it tasted like an ang moh Char Siew Bao. Lol. Don’t get me wrong, I am not complaining, it was just how I felt.

The cafe is a nice quiet cafe to hang around with friends over good food and drinks. Pricing of the dishes were at a very reasonable level, quality and standard of food is high, I will certainly be back for more. Since this round I did not try the dessert, I shall have it on my next trip.

Pick Me Up Cafe At Parkland @ ECP

PickMeUp Cafe, at East Coast Park, is at the newly built Parkland which was occupied previously by a golf driving range. If you still have no idea where it is, along the East Coast Service Road, look for Parkway Parade which is acrossed the ECP expressway and you should be able to locate it easily.

Exterior Overview
Exterior Overview

I was there with my brother on a Saturday night and maybe it was still a pretty new place so it was still quite quiet. There were ample parking lots available.

Interior Overview
Interior Overview

On the exterior of the cafe, the design resemble a garden on one side and on the other side, it was a little playground for kids; while the interior was modern, sleek and simple, pretty spacious.

The menu in PickMeUp Cafe revolves around ice cream and waffles (both sweet and savoury). There are some bread on the counter as well.

Single Scoop of Coffee Crunch with Museli topping
Single Scoop of Coffee Crunch with Museli topping

We tried various flavour and finally settled for a coffee crunch, single scoop. I was surprised to know that the ice cream comes with a topping. I choose museli.

The Manuka Waffle
The Manuka Waffle

There are three different types of waffles, the usual buttermilk, peanut butter and miso waffle. I was keen to try the Miso Waffle but my brother usually resist such usual flavour. So we went ahead to get The Manuka which has a buttermilk waffle, a Greek Yoghurt Gelato, and various toppings. I requested to replace it with a scoop of Strawberry Yoghurt Gelato and they agreed. I like such flexibility.

The waffle has a crispy edge and a fluffy pancake like texture, not the eggy or buttery kind. It was decent. We find that their fruity flavour ice cream fare so much better than the non-fruity ones. The other flavour which my brother like it during the trying was the Honey Melon.

It is a nice addition for a cooling treat after activities at the park. A nice cosy cafe to rest and relax before going home.

Dutch Colony Coffee On Frankel Avenue

After being forced to stay at home, after brunch at Two Bakers, due to the haze on Monday, a Public Holiday in lieu of Hari Raya, I was longing to go out so I decided to travel all the way to the East, to Frankel Avenue, for breakfast, at Dutch Colony Coffee, the next day since I wasn’t working.

When I was at the doorstep of Dutch Colony Coffee, it looks like it is on the dark side due to the black colour theme on the front, plus the dark cemented floor, bronze tiles at the counters and dark brown furniture in the cafe. And also the orange dim lighting. When I stepped into the cafe and walked further in, I notice the warm sunlight that entered the cafe through the top glass panel. I like such natural light penetrating indoor.

Menu
Menu

I took hold of a menu and was looking for something a little heavy but they offer only sourdough or croissant on their sandwiches. I wanted neither that day. So at the end, I turned to my favourite Banana Bread.

Dutch Colony Coffee is one of the not so usual cafe that offer other than the espresso based coffee. They have brewed coffee using various method. I will try these the next time.

The Banana Bread has a lighter flavour with a sweetish and sourish hint. What I like about the Banana Bread is that I could see and bit the banana pieces in the bread. Instead of regular butter, they provided espresso butter. I didn’t find that it enhanced the taste of the Banana Bread. No difference. I suppose that’s because I didn’t spread enough butter on the bread. Dutch Colony Coffee is ever good. It is nutty. It is chocolaty. I like such flavour notes.

Dutch Colony Coffee on Frankel is a pretty good cafe for hanging around. Seating at one of table, sipping coffee, browsing the internet or simply relax and rest.

Comestivel Desserts At Siglap Centre, Yummy

I went down to Comestivel Dessert at Siglap Centre after having an ice cream with almond essence and it lingered in my mouth, I feel that I needed more and better sweets stuff to wash off this dislike almond essence taste.

Siglap Centre looks so empty now with so many shops at the basement vacant. It lost the familiarity.

When I was there at about 4pm on a Saturday, it was almost sold out and there was a small queue. I chose to get a Salted Caramel Cheesecake Tart and a Snicker Bar Tart.

Salted Caramel Cheesecake
Salted Caramel Cheesecake

The verdict? It was awesome yummy. Though the tarts were on the sweeter side but I still find it acceptable.

The tart base tasted like Digestive biscuits. Somehow the entire combnation make the tart super yummy.

The Salted Caramel Cheesecake Tart has a good balance of cheese and salt and caramel.

Snicker Bar Tart
Snicker Bar Tart

While the Snicker Bar Tart has a subtle chocolaty taste and with the thinly sliced snicker, it provided some crunch of peanuts. Lovely.

I enjoyed the tarts very much. It was super addictive. I am sure I will return for more.
