The hawker centre at the forth level of Beauty World Centre, there you will find a stall sending burgers, Ham Bao Bao.
It doesn’t has much on its menu, very focus with five types of burgers. You can find the usual Beef and Fish burgers, 2 types of pork burgers and a chicken burger that is infused with local flavour, Ayam Buah Kerluak. When there is burger, how could fries be missing.
Everything on the menu looks delish to me and I wish I could try them all. What attracted me most was the Ayam Buah Kerluak. I like fusion dishes. The burger has a pretty thick black chicken patty due to the Buah Kerluak. I find the Buah Kerluak a bit too much and has masked the chicken flavour. For the fries, instead of using frozen fries, they cut the fresh potato into strip and fried it.
The pricing of the food are reasonable. If you don’t mind the heat and the ambience, Ham Bao Bao is a good alternative to McDonald that can be found on the first floor of Beauty World Centre. I am keen to try the Classic Beef Burger and Pulled Pork next.

Chicken Talk Kitchen is a Muslim owned family cafe in West Coast Village. Good news for our Muslim friends staying in the West.
I am curious why Chicken Talk and not other animal talk. This is a question I forgotten to ask when I was there.
The cafe does not have the most cosy settings. All are simple and sleek.
Set Lunch Menu
Chicken Talk Kitchen offers a very wide selection one page menu. There are good selections from Starters, Pizza, Salads, Pasta, Mains and Desserts. For lunch, set lunch menu is also available. There are also Student Menu too. I happen to choose a Main that is part of the Set Lunch Menu so of course I will opt for that. The lunch set is in fact cheaper than the Main itself, extremely valued for money.
The Lunch set has limited selection of Mains. It comes with a soup of the day and a can drink. How I wish they could have an option of dessert instead of soup.
Soup of the day was Creamy Potato & Leek Soup, if I am not wrong. It has a strong potato taste with lightly leek flavour and rather creamy too. But I think, some may find it a little too salty.
The plating of the Monterey Jack Chicken Cheese was comparable to the restaurant standard. The portion size was just nice for me. I was glad that it wasn’t huge. The Chicken has a strong BBQ sauce flavour. If you are a fan of BBQ sauce, I am sure you would like it. The dice fresh tomato provide a little tanginess to the dish. It was a pity that they uses Breast meat, the part that I dislike most. The mash potato was notable. It was smooth and creamy. I enjoyed it very much.
Chicken Talk Kitchen has some pastries and cakes made inhouse, such as the fruit tart and chocolate and pear pastry, others are from their supplier. I will want to try the made in-house ones the next time. I was keen with their Soft-shell Burgers as well. Another item for the next trip.
The Find is a Modern European Restaurant at the second level of Rochester Mall. It is located at a corner. After taking the escalator from ground floor that is near to Swissbake. I walked straight, round the perimeters and I sighted “The Find”.
It has a casual dining ambience with some very bright red cushy sofa seats at random spot. The chairs are mainly black and red metal chairs.
Glimpse of the Restaurant
Beside the Ala Carte Menu, The Find offers Set Lunch Menu too. I suppose they do change on a regular basis. For the set lunch menu, you may want to check The Find’s Facebook page. To view the set lunch that was offered while I was there, you can click here. The selection is pretty comprehensive, with seafood, meat, pasta, burgers, sides, desserts and even kids menu for selection.

l decided to try out their set lunch as I find it very value for money. There are two options, 2-course consisting of an appetizer and a main or 3-course consisting of a appetizer, a main and a dessert. I chose to have the 3-course as I wanted to try all the categories.
Soup is never my choice, so I chose the Arugula Salad over Potato Leek Soup. The salad was amazing. The Arugula was tossed in a sweetish sourish balsamic dressing that was so appetizing. The entire dish has a great balance. And I was surprise to find that the serving was huge.
For the Mains, there was an option of fish, Ginger Infused Barramundi and chicken, Herb Marinated Chicken Breast with spagehetti aglio olio. It was a difficult choice as I was worried that the fish might be either fishy or the ginger might be overpowering. I am never keen in Chicken Breast as it is usually tasteless and tough. And so, I finally chose the fish over the chicken. Neither my worries existed. It was so perfectly cooked. There was a mild ginger aroma, the fish was neither over-cooked or under-cooked. It was so perfect till the moisture were still locked in the flesh. The fish skin was lightly crispy with lots of marinate flavours. So ensure that each and every bite consist of the skin to savour the maximum flavour.
Finally, the dessert. I decided to have the Panna Cotta instead of the ice cream. The Panna Cotta was topped with a thin layer of strawberry sauce. The Panna Cotta was richly filled with vanilla flavour that seems sugarless while the strawberry sauce was slightly sweetish and the sourish strawberry slices complemented each element perfectly. Make sure each spoon consist of both the sauce and strawberry slice. It was definitely divine.
At every dish, the details were well taken care to create an almost perfect creation. Without doubt, I will certainly return! And indeed it is The Find!
My friend and I were meeting at Orchard so I suggested to try Table @ Pip’s, a new restaurant in Orchard Central which has a causal dinning setting. It occupies quite a huge corner of basement two.
As usual, we have a starter for sharing. We decided to have Escargot. I was surprise to find that it was paired with mushroom. And it was surprisingly pleasant. There was a brown sauce that went very well with the dish except that it was a little salty
For main dish, my friend ordered the Ribeye Steaks as she was craving for steak while I want something light so I chose the Pacific Halibut Fillet.
Pacific Halibut Fillet
My friend love the Ribeye Steak. She found it to be excellent. The steak was full of the beef natural flavour and it was tender. While my Pacific Halibut Fillet, I find it too bland. Halibut isn’t a fish that has meat with very sweet note. It was very much very light in taste. Though there were some lychee to increase the sweetness but that didn’t help much.
The crew highly recommended us the Chocolate Durian Cake and since I like both Chocolate and Durian and in addition, I find the combination unique so I was game to try it. They must have used a high quality chocolate to make the cake. It was chocolaty with bitter sweet taste. As for the durian, I find that it didn’t go very well with chocolate. Moreover, chocolate was stronger in taste than durian so towards the end, I couldn’t even taste the durian but only the chocolate. I like the shredded orange as well. It was heavenly when it was eaten together with the chocolate.
Table @ Pip’s is a nice causal restaurant. The food is of high quality ingredients and the service crew and the chef are very friendly.
GastroSmith’s former was The Humble Loaf. After some transformation, now is the re-born GastroSmith at Beach Road. There was much anticipation of this newly open cafe from many. They were fully booked out for the many dinner nights. Likewise for me, I wanted to try it on the first day of its opening but couldn’t make, only able to visit them after returning from my Hong Kong long work trip.
I was there for lunch with my cousin who was back from London.
The design was very much industrial theme, a very popular design theme these days. It has a featured wall, like in many cafe too.

My cousin has a Blackcurrant Sparkling Organic Juice
There are three section in the menu; one for drink, one for lunch and one for dinner. Selection for lunch was rather limited. Some breakfast items like eggs and some mains and snacks. That was about it
We ordered a Tempura Wings for sharing. We like the wings, especially the sauce on the wings. It was delicious. It was sweet and spicy.
The Not-So-Humble Eggs v2.0, I wonder how was the v1.0 and the next v3.0 was like and will be like. Anyway. The v2.0 was … look presentable. I like eggs that are semi-raw and with the ham serrano, that gave the saltiness together with the onions and gave more flavours to the entire dish. It was rather appetising. The bread, nothing impressive.
As for the Steak Frites … The steak was considerably good. It has a nice char which gave a nice fragrance to the steak and most importantly, it was tender. There is room for improvement for the fries. It was a little over fried, to the extend it was hard. I couldn’t taste the potato fragrance of the fries at all.
Overall, there are some hits and misses so I must say, food-wise, decent but not impressive. Maybe that’s due to the anticipation that was built over the period so was expecting something really good. Nevertheless, was not to the extend of disappointment too.
I am still exploring and trying out what Lau Pa Sat has to offered and Lurvy Fresh is one of the stall in the newly opened Lau Pa Sat that I decided to give it a try today.
Lurvy Fresh serves a very focus menu of salad, pasta, some snacks (Nibbles) and Pancakes.
As I was not very hungry during lunch today but was greedy so I decided to order a Smoked Duck Salad and a Marshmallow and Chocolate Pancake.
The pancake is made fresh upon ordering. Above is a photo of the Chocolate and Marshmallow Pancake in the making.
It has a nice thin layer of batter and generous amount of both chocolate and marshmallow. I love marshmallow when it is heated.
I was expecting the Smoked Duck Salad to be slightly briny but it wasn’t. The entire salad has a fruity tone. It has sweet fruity salad dressing. Besides Smoked Duck, there were lettuce, mandarin orange, cherry tomatoes, walnut and as I was eating, I notice grapes in the salad as well. I like the salad. If you like sweet fruity tasting items, this is for you.

I was pretty geared up to enjoy a great meal at Three Buns By the Potato Head Folk at Keong Saik Street this morning. Both the weather and mood was good and sunny and at the restaurant … read on to find out more.
Three Buns by Potato Head Folk has much advertisement by various food blogs before it finally opened its door on 6 June, Friday. Anticipation was built by the day. I was extremely excited and eager to try. In fact, I planned to have lunch there on Friday. It was a day delayed from my plan.
On the facebook of Potato Head Folk and all other food blog stated that the opening time is 11am. I reached at about 11.15am and was informed that Three buns opened only at 12pm. 45 minutes to 12pm and so I have to hang around the area. I was already a bit upset. Anyway, still looking forward to the award winning burger though.
Potato Head Folk took over the Tong Ah Kopitiam space. The first floor and second floor occupied by Three Buns; the ground floor is where the kitchen and the Al Fresco seats are.
If you are looking for indoor seats, head up to the second floor where the restaurant is. While the third and rooftop are occupied by the bar.
As I stepped into the entrance of the stairs, I was mesmerized by the drawing on the wall. It was so lovely and I find it cute too.
When I reached the second floor, I was surprised by the lively ambience. The artist must have taken lots of effort and pain in all the designs and drawing. I love them all.
The service crew took painstaking effort to introduce me to the menu, recommending me their signature burgers and drinks. And highlighting to me that the Bionic Tonic (a lemongrass drink) was not available. More disappointment added till this far as I was keen on having the lemongrass drink as the rest either I don’t like it due to the ingredients used such as cinnamons and ginger or I shouldn’t have it, such as lemon and orange (sour and is bad for my gastric reflux). I make do nevertheless, having an open mind, so I ordered a Ginger Ninja to try.
They served me a wrong drink. At the first sip, I felt that it was tasteless, I was expecting to taste strong ginger scent since it was Ginger “Ninja”. The crew after a few delayed minutes somehow realized that they served me a wrong drink. What they served me was Green Tea. I told them I drank it. Initially they left it behind for me but then they somehow, not sure why, they asked if I wanted. I didn’t want the drink but I didn’t mind them leaving it behind for me. Since they asked, I said, “No, they can have it.”
The Ginger Ninja has a good amount of ginger taste and spiciness. So for those who don’t enjoy ginger at all, should avoid this drink. I am not a ginger fan, but still pretty acceptable to me.
I was in a very greedy mood, knowing that I probably won’t finish the burger alone, but I still went ahead to order a side, the Naughty Fries. I thought to myself, I could have it taken away for my brother to try, killing two birds with one stone.
Personally, I felt that the condiment in the burgers such as the mayo & the sauce and the pickles were overwhelming, it was too much. I am one who love sauces but I still find it too much and masked the beefy taste. I could only taste the condiments, though I could sense the texture of the beef through the chewing. The burger bun was soft and fluffy, that was good. So it may be a good idea to asked for the sauces and the pickles by the side, especially for those who love naturally food taste.
The naughty fries was great. The parsley, the spring onions, shallots and sesame seeds added lots of fragrance and flavour to the beef. It was perfect. It went extremely well with the potato. The potato seems like the freshly sliced and fried type, not the frozen kind. I could taste a good amount of potato taste.
The portion was too huge for me so I cut a third of the burger and left the rest untouched. As for the fries, I ate half and left the remaining half untouched as well. With so much of quality food left, it would be ashamed and wasteful to have it dumped into the bin and so I asked for a takeaway. To my ardent horror, they threw it away. Again, not sure why they realized that after a pretty long while, that I actually asked for a take away and not asked for it to be removed from my table. A lady came forward, I suppose she is the restaurant manager, to inform about the misfortune incident due to a miscommunication. Instead of packing it for me to have it taken away, they threw it away. I started to fume inside me but still showing calm on the outside. Then the supposed restaurant manager, her body language indicated that she wasn’t apologetic at all, that’s my sense. She offered to give me a new order of fries but that’s not the point. What about my two third untouched burger? I told her I didn’t want the fries. This was because what I really wanted was the burger. She never once mentioned that she will replace my two thrid portion of the burger. Instead she offered to give A LITTLE discount. I stress again, A LITTLE discount and yes it is A LITTLE.
After she was done with the swiping of my credit card and came forward with the receipt, she highlighted that it was as a goodwill that she gave me a 10% discount. After I made the payment, very quickly she turned her back at me and walked away, without a last apology offered. I was really very disappointed and upset. As I saw her going round the restaurant, stopping by at tables to ask for feedback earlier and now due to some not so nice incident, she did this. It was so extreme in behaviour. With such as body language indicated, I didn’t bother to argue my point with her as I was neither in the mood to. Moreover I was fuming, didn’t want to act badly but at the same time, I really wanted them to know my thought and feel too.
A ten percent discount of the bill. Ten percent value is equivalent to $3.60 versus the value of the two third burger which is $13.33 which do you think is more? It is very obvious isn’t it? It’s simple maths. Oh ya, don’t forget I got half the fries as well, that is $4.50. A total of closed to $18 versus a $3.60 discount. I rather the mistake or the miscommunication not happened and I have the burger and the fries. I can’t help but feel that I was made to pay for the mistake they made.
The food-wise was considerably good, ambience was nice but the service was not so. Whatever happen, happened, I won’t be back yelling at the lady nor at the crew. To the crew, I hope he would have this lesson learned. To the lady, I hope she would reflect and see where and what she could have done better. I really think they could have done a much better job in the service recovery.
Personally, these days I don’t see many restaurants doing well in this aspect. Nevertheless, I have a very good experience with Goodwood Park Hotel. I was very pleased with the way they managed and handled the situation back then and I would like to commend them. As a way of apology, they gave me a box of 20 pieces of durian puffs, an apology note, spoke to me over the phone and they sent their Assistant Director (if I remember correctly) to deliver it to me. And not forgetting to apology personally as well. I really think Goodwood Park did an excellent job in service recovery. Ever since, I have been going back to Goodwood Park Hotel regularly, especially for their Durian cakes and pastries.
Sorry for the diverting, back to where we were. Many a times, we won’t be able to differentiate good and great service. It is only through such incident and how the service team reacted to the service recovery separate the good and the great.
One incident after another; from the incorrect information of opening hours to the unavailability of a drink and finally the unfortunate incident, what could I say more?! Perhaps, I am just down on my luck. In fact, two days in a row, something not so nice happened during my lunch at two different restaurants. You can read my entry for the first incident here, at The Fat Cat.
